Bede was a Northumbrian monk active in the late 7th-early 8th century, and is widely regarded as the first English historian. A great deal of this album is inspired by traditional Northumbrian music, and the links between sound and an evolving identity. As a figurehead of a time when the North East of England was a major centre of learning in Europe and well-connected to the continent culturally and intellectually, Bede is worth celebrating. I also happen to share part of my name with him.
